From the local NBC affiliate San Diego :
“Chong said he was at a friend’s house in University City celebrating 4/20, a day many marijuana users set aside to smoke, when agents came inside and raided the residence. Chong was then taken to the DEA office in Kearny Mesa.
He said agents questioned him, and then told him he could go home. One agent even offered him a ride, Chong said. No criminal charges were filed against him.
But Chong did not go home that night. Instead, he was placed in a cell for five days without any human contact and was not given food or drink. In his desperation, he said he was forced to drink his own urine.
“I had to do what I had to do to survive….I hallucinated by the third day,” Chong said. “I was completely insane.”
Dude, talk about a buzz-kill. This poor kid was FORGOTTEN in a holding cell for FIVE DAYS after his arrest for smoking pot on 4/20! Yes, his name is Chong, but this is no laughing matter. I am glad he survived his ordeal, which left him starving, dehydrated, delirious and near kidney failure. He stated that he drank his own urine and eventually gave up on his hopes for survival and tried to kill himself with glass from his own spectacles. He tried to carve “sorry mom” into his arm and nurses found glass lodged in his throat, which presumably he tried to ingest in an effort to put himself out of his own misery. He says he called out and kicked the door repeatedly when he heard people walking by. Although he annoyed neighboring cell occupants, it seems his cries were ignored by DEA officials. They finally found him completely incoherent after five days spent HANDCUFFED in a 5×10 cell. The DEA transported him to the hospital and paid for his care, during which he spent three days in intensive care. Not surprisingly, given the severity of the incident, the DEA has offered an apology to the man:
“I am deeply troubled by the incident that occurred here last week,” DEA San Diego Acting Special Agent in Charge William R. Sherman said in a statement provided to Yahoo News. “I extend my deepest apologies the young man and want to express that this event is not indicative of the high standards that I hold my employees to. I have personally ordered an extensive review of our policies and procedures.”
I am sure they will also be reviewing some court documents in the very near future. This pot-head is going to get PAID. Daniel Chong missed his midterms in college while being detained, and is not sure he will return to school after the harrowing incident.
